SRMC matches car seat donation funds

Sidney Regional Medical Center (SRMC) recently matched funds raised by children who attend Kids Korner Daycare & Learning Korner Preschool to donate to the Cheyenne County Safe Kids car seat program.

Children gathered their pennies, dimes and nickels, along with other donations over the course of two weeks to raise money. SRMC was not going to let the children go it alone, and offered to match any funds raised.

"We made a competition out of it where each of the rooms competed to see who could raise the most. The kids exceeded our expectations, "said Cassie Challburg, Kids Korner preschool teacher. "We chose the Safe Kids car seat program because it involves the safety of our kids and they do a great job at making sure the children are safe."

Every year, Kids Korner likes to raise money and make a donation to an organization devoted to helping children. In a short period of time, with mostly pocket changes, the children raised $816.44.

"When we heard these kids were raising money, we wanted to get involved and help make a contribution to the program," said Kristin Narjes, parent and director of respiratory therapy and cardiac rehab at SRMC.

Rachel Forster, PharmD, Director of Pharmacy, said SRMC was able to match the funds raised through a federally-based 340B program, bringing the total donated amount to $1,632.88.

Sidney Police Department and SRMC has operated the Safe Kids car seat program for more than 10 years. The program provides car seats for newborn babies, replacement car seats in the event of a crash, as well as low cost to no cost car seats to families in need. SRMC and Sidney PD also provide information and instruction for installing car seats properly and when particular car seats should be used, such as forward facing or booster seats.

"More than 50% of car seats on the road today are improperly installed and improperly used," said Officer Curtis Hofrock, Sidney PD. "If they're not installed correctly or used correctly, they won't perform properly in the event of a crash."

For more information about the Safe Kids car seat program, contact Hofrock at the Sidney Police Department or Andrea Young RN, with the SRMC Outpatient Clinic-308.254.7628 ext 1040 for information.
