Local youth perform "Shakespeare Goes to Gravel Gulch"

This weekend local youth will be performing the Way Out West Community Theatre (WOW) youth production of “Shakespeare Goes to Gravel Gulch” by Tim Kelly.

Erin Huddleston with WOW said, “For the past 2 and half months, these kids have gotten together to meticulously practice, memorize, learn blocking, and so very much more to put this show on.”

Huddleston said the show involves about 30 kids ranging from those that have never stepped foot on a stage to those who have been involved in almost 30 plays.

“We have had the pleasure of working with a wide range of young actors, and each and every one of them have stepped up the plate to step outside of their comfort zones,” Huddleston said.

“Shakespeare Goes to Gravel Gulch” is a show set in a small Arizona town of Gravel Gulch said Huddleston. The play begins on the day a Shakespeare show troupe marches into town. While some of the show troupe thinks that a routine show will be taking place, the two leaders of the group have other plans that involve robbing the bank for gold nuggets.

“That’s all I am going to say for now as I don’t want to spoil any surprises,” Huddleston said, “but we have villains, a hero, star-crossed youngsters, prospectors, outlaws, and what show wouldn’t be complete without a rubber chicken.

“These kids have worked so hard and are so excited to put this show on. Not for me, but for you, their family and friends, our supporters, and our community,” Huddleston said.

“I have had the privilege of spending my evenings hanging out, teaching, helping, and laughing with these kids,” Huddleston said. “One of the most rewarding things about directing a kids show is that you get to watch these kids take something that they have never done before, develop it, become that character, and proudly stand on that stage in front of their friends and family, and do something that can be terrifying, and that is to actually perform.”

The shows are Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 19 at 2 p.m. All shows will be held at the Sidney High School Auditorium. Tickets may be purchased from individual actors, at the door, or online. This weekend local youth will be performing the Way Out West Community Theatre (WOW) youth production of “Shakespeare Goes to Gravel Gulch” by Tim Kelly.
