Sidney Public Library hosts 'Lunch in Olympic Park'

Sidney Public Library hosted its "Lunch in Olympic park" Tuesday, where students from Cool Kids Club and families from the community brought sack lunches to hear and participate in story time.

"I have been doing this for 30 years," Children's Librarian, Eleen Nightingale said, "My favorite part is Lunch in Olympic park, its more casual and the kids get to sit and enjoy and participate."

"It's normally held on our patio area, (Olympic park) but it was too hot today," said Nightingale.

Sidney Public Library continues to provide summer reading options to all ages.

At the beginning of the summer reading program, Sidney Public Library Director Andrew Sherman said, "It's a Nebraska thing to have the kids, young adults and adults participate in the summer reading," Sherman said, "children are by far our biggest participants, but we do offer something to all ages."

Summer reading programs are designed to encourage elementary-aged children to keep reading during summer vacation.

This year's theme is fitness and health, and children and family activities are planned throughout June and July to keep Sidney motivated and entertained during the summer season.

Childrens Librarian, Eleen Nightingale said the Library Association, along with other librabies across the state choose the theme for the summer reading program.

"The themed program offers material related to the topic each summer," Nightingale said, "It's more cost effective and a great way to connect with other libraries, this years children's program is called 'On Your Mark, Get Set... Read!'"

Reading programs are funded through the Friends of Sidney Public Library.

Circulation Librarian Jermee Jones said, for the children's program, readers can pick up a reading log at the library to keep track of the books they finish during the summer.

"At five books, this kids receive a pencil and a guess at the candy jar," Jones said, "at ten books the kids receive a badge, certificate, various gift certificates from local businesses and two guesses for the candy jar."

Keeping in theme the candy jar is dressed like a baseball player, and filled with taffy. If the student guesses the correct amount in the jar they get to keep it.

While the theme for this year's programs is fitness and health, Nightingale said participants are welcome to read anything and everything.
