Larry Poitra - Obituary

Larry Poitra, 69 of Sidney, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, July 3, 2016 at Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services are planned for later date with details to be announced prior to services.

Larry David Poitra, the son of Elmer and Emma (Baker) Poitra was born November 15, 1946 in Belcourt, North Dakota. He grew up in Belcourt, Dunseith and Rolla, North Dakota during his younger years. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, attaining the rank of Sergeant during the Viet Nam War. After his honorable discharge in 1976, he was united in marriage to Susie Clorine Peacock. To this union three sons were born.

Later Larry divorced and traveled to the western states to work in construction and the pipeline business where he then met the love of his life San Juana "Janie" Valdez. They resided in Potter, Nebraska where they farmed for years. While working for the Corp of Engineers doing heavy construction he was involved with the flood plain construction in Sidney. Larry and San Juana were married for 23 years until she passed in 2009.

Larry and Janie traveled extensively to visit family in North Dakota, Colorado and Texas. Larry's pride and joy was his family. He enjoyed spending as much time with his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He devoted a lot of his time helping out his family and friends. He was a big Bronco football fan as well as a big Sci-Fi fan.

Survivors include three sons: Conan and Michelle Poitra of Goddard, KS, David and Mikel Holland of Sidney, IA and Eddie Poitra of Colorado; three brothers: Clifford, Randy and Roger Poitra all of Dunseith, ND; two sisters Mary Poitra of Fargo, ND and Melinda Poitra of Belcourt, ND; 3 grandchildren Kody Holland of Texas, Kory Holland of Oklahoma and Jessica Poitra of California; three great-grandchildren: Justis, Bradley and Trinity Holland of Texas as well as his extended family: Angelica Balandran, Tony Balandran, Olga Lenzen, Juan Balandran and Freddy Balandran all of Sidney, NE, Pete Balandran of Texas and Irma Mendoza of Kimball, NE and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Poitra family.
