Richard V. Rolls Obituary

Richard V. Rolls, 83, longtime Sidney resident, died surrounded by his family at Sidney Regional Medical Center after a brief illness, on Tuesday, July 5, 2016.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 11th with a Wake Service at 6 p.m., Sunday, July 10th. Both services will be in the St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Jim Heithoff officiating. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Cremation has been held. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel to sign Rich's register book and leave condolences for the family.

Richard Vernon Rolls, was born January 21, 1933 in Minden, Nebraska to Samuel Vernon and Marie Louise (Gaudreault) Rolls, the youngest of three children. He graduated from Minden High School in 1951, and attended the University of Nebraska. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955, and after being honorably discharged from the military, he attended Kearney State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in history. He was united in marriage to Sandra Miller on August 7, 1965 in Sidney, and to this union, four children were born. Richard taught and coached at Sunol Public Schools, St. Patrick's Academy in Sidney and Kimball High School. After retiring from teaching in 1977, he began a career in insurance sales, retiring in 2012. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and served many years on the parish council and on the school board at St. Patrick's High School. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman, and in recent years, enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities and sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; children Jennifer (Randy) Wood of Hemingford, Tom (Teresa) Rolls of Sidney, Steve (Janelle) Rolls of Alliance, and Scott (Cindy) Rolls of Sidney. Grandchildren: Nicholas and Matthew Wood, Brian and Spencer Rolls, Colton, Gage and Ryley Rolls, and Mitchell, Macie, and McGuire Rolls; sister, Ruth Swanson of Geneva; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older sister, Dorothy Smith.
