Sidney hosts Dash for the Splash

This is the 3rd year for Sidney Regional Medical Center's Dash for the Splash Triathlon. This fundraiser event benefits Sidney Swimming Pool and Deadwood Trail expansion projects.

Randi Norton, marketing and public relations for SRMC said, "Dash for the Splash began in 2014 as a different way to encourage members of the community and surrounding areas to get out there and get active." She said, "the triathlon also serves as one of several initiatives for the Community Health Needs Assessment.

"This was also seen as a way to give back to the community of Sidney, as the proceeds have been donated to the new pool and Deadwood Trail expansion projects," Norton said.

In its debut event in 2014, more than $2,000 was raised to give back to the community.

Classified as a 'super sprint' the triathlon is a shorter version of a traditional triathlon and includes a 250-meter swim, 8-mile bike ride and 2-mile run, all taking place at the Sidney Aquatic Center and along the Deadwood Trail.

"Last year, the committee added 2 kids' courses, for 8-10 year olds (50-meter swim, 1-mile bike, 1-mile run) and 11-13-year- olds (100-meter swim, 2-mile bike, 1-mile run)," Norton said.

Last year, Nathan Ostdiek of Columbus was the male winner in the 14- to 35-year-old category with the fastest individual time of the day at 47 minutes, 27 seconds.

The top spot for women over 35 was Annette Krueger of Sidney, who finished in 51:10.

Winners of the 14-34 team competition were, Austin Jacobson, Ryan Aurich and Ryan Birner. They teamed up to finish the course in 47:23.

In the ages 8-10 category, Sidney's Jaeden Dillehay took first place for boys 8-10. Brody Blome took the top prize among boys 11-to 13-years-old. Lauren Ostdiek of Columbus was tops among the girls and the winning youth relay team (8-10) that included Kayla Westby, Carli Black and Jordan DeNovellis.

For participants preferring to share the work load, the option to sign up as a three-person team is available. In the team competition, each member will either swim, ride or run. Sign up will remain open until Friday. Registration forms are available at SRMC, the Cheyenne County Community Center or at http://www.getmeregistered.com.

Sign up is available on the Dash for the Splash Facebook page.

The cost is $40 for adults (ages 14 and older) and $25 for children (8-13). The price for a team is $65 for adults and $45 for youth teams. All the proceeds will be donated.

The fun begins Aug. 6 at 7:30 a.m with the first adult wave starting the race at the Sidney Aquatic Center.
