Lightning sparks fire calls

A passing storm system brought with it an impressive lightning show early Sunday evening, but local fire departments weren't as impressed with the results.

Lightning sparked nearly a dozen grass fires within the county, sparring only one rural fire department, Lodgepole, calls for service.

The Sidney Rural Volunteer responded to four separate fires, spread across the southern and western portions of its district. Just one of those, near the intersection of County Roads 4 and 111, in the southwest corner of the District, resulted in a substantial amount of damage.

Peetz, Colo. Fire Department assisted Sidney with the call, which Sidney Fire Chief Keith Stone said burned approximately one acred of standing wheat.

Sidney also responded to a fire that burned a small amount of hay and an old corral three miles west of Sidney. The other fires within Sidney's district were in either wheat stubble or grassland.

Potter Fire Department responded to a trio of calls, and Dalton-Gurley was out as well.
