King's Daughters kick off donation drive

The Wide Awake Circe of the King's Daughters in Sidney, founded in 1891, is preparing for it's annual donation drive.

The charity provides various types of assistance to those in need in the Sidney area.

The assistance varies on the needs of individuals and circumstances. The King's Daughters have contributed to rent, utilities and medical bills to assist a family through tough periods.

The King's Daughters also assemble layette baskets containing sleepers, onsies, diapers, a blanket and other necessities for new mothers who might not have everything they need for a new baby. These blankets are left at the hospital to distribute as needed.

Christmas is the Wide Awake Circle's busiest time of the year. The group gives food items to the Western Heritage senior apartment residents, delivers poinsettias to community members who have lost a loved one during the year, plus preparing and delivering cookie trays to those who may need a little cheer in the community.

The group's biggest project of the year is providing Christmas food boxes to area families. This tradition has been carried on for more than 100 years.

The food boxes generally include a meat, potato, vegetable, bread and dessert item to feed their family a Christmas meal. In addition staples such as milk, bread, eggs, fruit plus a few other items are included to assist these families during the holiday season.

King's Daughters is a non-denominational, year round group that gives anonymously.

This week the charity will be sending out its annual donation letter asking various individuals in the community to contribute to it's efforts.

Individuals who wish to donate or are in need of donations may do so in correspondence to: King's Daughters, PO Box 823, Sidney, NE 69162.
