Doggie Dash raises funds

Rasing funds for a local shelter, dogs and their owners will be dashing their way through a 5K run/walk at this years Old Settlers' Celebration in Lodgepole

Terry Duffield, founder of Adopt-A-Dog Animal Rescue, said she started rescuing dogs in 1986, first by putting pens up in her yard in the town of Chappell before buying a house in the country with more land.

"We kept the dogs north of the house at first and later I found an old hog building and was able to get it moved onto our property," Duffield said.

Duffield said the proceeds from the "Doggie Dash" will aid in the funding of a shelter the group has been building since a fire destroyed the all of the kennels and a small building that housed more kennels, in 2006.

"The night my kennels burned down was a bad time in my life, everything I knew went down with the building," said Duffield.

After some fundraising and a lot of help from friends and family the organization bought a piece of land and started the building of the new Adopt-A-Dog Shelter

"We developed a board of directors and got our 501c3 non profit," Duffield said. "The board had three ladies on it, Melody Harms, Jonna Wheelock, and me. Our group kept on pushing and working and raising funds and building."

Adopt-a-Dog currently has six dogs and seventeen cats and kittens available for adoption. Duffield said three dogs were adopted in the past few days and are "doing fantastic."

"We have two little dogs, Bianca and Manny, just the cutest little pups, one female one male. Duffield said. "There is an Aussie male, Charlie, and a male pit boxer mix named Marvin, wonderful boy. The male golden retriever mix is very timid and needs a special home to understand his fears, his name is Roper."

There are lots of adult cats, male and female, said Duffield and several kittens with numerous personalities that are very much wanting a home to call their own.

Starting at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 the Doggie Dash will go around the outskirts of Lodgepole.

"The walk has some beautiful scenery," Duffiled said. "It will be a great time for dogs and their owners to be together or just people getting out and getting in a great walk in the morning."

Doggie Dash registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. in the North Park by the baseball field in Lodgepole. Registration is $20 and includes a tumbler and a tennis ball for your pup. To pre-register call 308-566-0208.
