Robotics Club kicks off season

The 4-H Robotics Club held its first meeting this season on Tuesday at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney. The club is available for first through 12th grade.

According to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln Extension office in Sidney, the positive impact the Robotics Club has on participants is gratifying. Research has shown participants have more interest in doing well in school and show more interest in attending college.

By joining the Robotics Club participants will get to research challenges facing today's scientist - apply real-world math and science concepts, learn critical thinking, and team building and presentation skills. They will also get to design, build, test and program robots to enter tournaments and celebrations.

Cynthia Gill with the UNL Extension office said the Robotics Club as been around Sidney as part of the 4-H program for four years. Before that time the club existed as an informal group. Since 4-H has taken over the program, it has expanded in numbers and now participates in competitions. Robotics Club also participates different camps and projects throughout the year.

In January the Regional Tournament for Robotics will be held in Sidney. Through different competitions, participants have the chance to compete in include regional, state, national and world tournaments.

Gill said it has been exciting to watch the Robotics Club grow into what it is today. She said the club has is introducing robotics participants into different 4-H areas that they may be interested in, which helps participants grow in every area of life.

Currently, there are three different programs participants may be a part of with the Robotics Club. Junior League consists of first through third grades, First Lego League is fourth through eighth grade, The First Tech program is an advanced league for mainly high school students but may be open to middle school participants who are qualified.
