Underclassmen shine in cross country opener

Underclassmen stepped to the forefront in Sidney's first cross country meet this season, with freshmen and sophomores leading the way for both boys and girls teams at Monument Shadows Golf Course Friday.

Sidney freshman Kate Riggs finished in the top 10 to lead the varsity squad to a fifth place finish. Riggs ran the 5,000 meter course in 21:34.53 for eighth place, followed by classmate Taighlor Arnett, whose 22:02.82 was good for 14th. Finishing in 20th and 31st, respectively, in the 89-runner field were Lady Raiders Kara Birner and Hannah Kennedy, who both had personal best times.

As a team, Sidney's boys finished fourth, led by sophomore Collin Brauer, who was 14th with a 18:23.78. Kaden Vowers, a junior, was 17th with a personal best 18:28.5. They were followed by Mitch Portner, a junior, in 27th, and senior Will Castner in 33rd. There were 114 runners in the boys varsity field.

In junior varsity competition, Sidney's boys would have had finished in second as a team (no official team scores are kept in junior varsity), led by freshman Jacob Peckham and sophomore Taylor Hart. Sidney's junior varsity girls were led by senior Jolene Oliverius and junior Kylie Rosdall and would have been fourth in team scoring.

In the middle school division, Lyndsey Haddock set a 3,000-meter school record, running the girls course in 14:16.84, while Tre Canas ran a personal best for the boys at 11:36.15.

Sidney's next cross country meet is Friday at Littleton, Colo.
