Veterans help students learn human development

Human development is the examination of a persons growth over the span of their life. There is one human development class that take their learning a bit further than the textbook.

Brett Avila teaches Human Development Across a Lifespan at Sidney High School. The class takes students in grades 10 through 12 and offers them a hands-on approach to learning the physical, cognitive and emotional development of a distinct set of people.

Two years ago, the class decide to take learning a step further, and organized "Raiders Reaching Out," a student-driven project that not only teaches human development, but also contributes to human lives they learn about.

Last year RRR helped homeless teens in the Scottsbluff area by learning about their circumstances, and offering aid by taking donations and creating care packages.

This year's set of human development students decided to focus their studies on the people in the armed forces, studying and discussing the emotional, physical and cognitive effects on a person in the armed forces throughout their life.

"We talked about the physical emotional and cognitive effects in times of war and active duty," Avila said.
