Proposed truck routes subject of council discussion on roads

As city officials work on improving the condition of city streets, one of the first steps proposed has met with mild opposition and curiosity.

The proposed establishment of truck routes brought a number of truck owners to council chambers Tuesday. Two of those question both the need for and the effectiveness of truck routes. The third owner representative was concerned how the establishment of truck routes would affect their business, which does not sit on one of the routes.

Establishing the proposed routes, said Sidney City Manager Ed Sadler, is just one of many steps the city will need to take to meet its goal of improving overall street condition.

Truck routes, Sadler said, will reduce unnecessary trips on other city streets, particularly in residential areas.

"If you're serious about improving your streets, there are a number of steps you are going to have to take, and I think this is one of them," Sadler said.
