Max A. Mathewson - Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend Max A. Mathewson, 87 of Sterling, passed away quietly April 24th, 2017 at Devonshire Acres Nursing Home in Sterling, Colorado. Visitation will be from 1 pm to 6 pm Sunday, April 30 at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Monday, May 1 at First English Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The youngest of five children, Max was born in Potter, NE on February 22nd, 1930 to Warren Dewey (Dude) Mathewson and Kate Lydia (Herboldsheimer) Mathewson. Max grew up in the Potter area and graduated from Potter High School in 1947. After graduation and several years of farming on his own, Max married Emma Haupt on June 11th, 1950. The young couple built the home where they lived for more than 60 years on their farm 25 miles NW of Sterling. Max spent his entire life farming and ranching and worked as a mechanic on the side.

Max was baptized in the Methodist Church April 5, 1931 and was confirmed in 1956 at First English Lutheran Church in Sterling where he was an active member and served as Elder for many years. He loved woodworking and riding horses back in the day, he was a member of the Meshawa Riding Club, and also served as a 4-H leader. Friends and neighbors will remember him always for his broad smile, twinkling eyes and colorful stories.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Carol Harris and Leota McKinney and her husband Dale, brother Wendel Mathewson and infant daughter Baby Emma Mathewson.

Max is survived by his wife Emma Mathewson of Sterling, brother Rodney Mathewson and his wife Arlene of Sidney, NE, sister in-law Shirley Mathewson of Sidney Nebraska, 6 children; Tonie Yetter and husband Ron of Fort Morgan, Wendy Mathewson of Littleton, CO, Steven Mathewson and wife Ella Mae of Sterling, Gail Dick and husband Marty of DeSoto, KS, Daniel Mathewson and fiancé Gidget Conyers of Sterling, and Amber Mathewson of Sahuarita, AZ; 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and several step grand and great grandchildren.
