Potter Car Bowl hits Saturday

POTTER - The third annual Potter Car Bowl Saturday is a day of melodrama, bowling, bull riding, and, of course, exceptional cars.

The event started as a way to attract more people to the village's theater productions, Drew Enevoldsen, event organizer, said.

"We noticed that awareness of our melodramas was starting to dwindle and we wanted to get our numbers up," Enevoldsen said. "We thought if we held a car show it would bring more people into town."

The event has grown since then to include a bowling tournament in Potter's Duckpin Alley, and rodeo event featuring J.R. Yearous.

"He wanted to do something for the kids and he's doing miniature bull riding," Enevoldsen said. "We thought, sounds great."

The melodrama featured this year is "The Stinky Feet Gang."

"It's about robbers who go around using their smelly feet instead of guns," Enevoldsen said. "We sell these foam balls, we call them yellow snowballs, and the kids can buy them at the concession stand and throw them at the villains on stage."

The car show compliments Potter's unique automotive history.

"We actually hold the car show on the historic Lincoln Highway byway, the original road that predates Highway 30," Enevoldsen said. "It ran right down the edge of Potter."

Every car registration comes with free tickets to the show, Enevoldsen said.

"The car show board then reimburses the American Legion," he said. "All the funds from the melodrama go to the restoration of our historic theater here in Potter."

There are no for-profit vendors at the event, Enevoldsen said. All money raised Saturday returns to its sponsoring organizations.

"Everything going on that day is for civic organizations. Lions Club, the American Legion, groups that give back to the community," he said. "All the food served that day, the money goes back into those organizations."

All money raised beyond the cost of the event itself goes back into the community.

"We always pick some avenue to donate it. This year it's the arena," Enevoldsen said. "We have our own full blown arena here in Potter now."
