Highway Patrol eyeing Sidney Airport for base of operations

Nebraska Highway Patrol is considering Sidney Airport as a possible new base of operations.

Ron Meyer, Airport Authority member, reported to Sidney City Council Tuesday the Highway Patrol is looking to relocate from Ogallala.

“They’re looking for hangar space,” Meyer said. “They want an area to operate out of. They have a plane here.”

He added, “There is some shake-up with the Highway Patrol right now at the state level.”

Nebraska State Patrol Headquarters confirmed Sidney had been considered.

“At one time it was being considered as an option,” Capt. Kevin Ryan said Wednesday.

Sidney Airport is “doing everything we can to encourage them here,” Meyer said.

“They were saying with their current budget, they needed to cut expenses,” he said. “We looked at probably doing it for half of what they’re spending now. We’re real attractive to them.”

The alternative, Meyer said, would be grim.
