Sidney Shooting Park holds open house at archery range

Sidney Shooting Park held an open house Saturday to showcase its newly refurbished archery range.

"We wanted to show people the increased availability of shooting options in the area," said club member Deanna Kendall.

The changes have come about since May, when club members began working on implementing newly designed courses. Those include a new target practice range, as well as a field course.

On the practice range, Kendall said the new targets, build on frames that remain in place, make it more convenient for shooters, who no longer "have to lug out targets" when they practice.

Kendall said the field course is new, traversing about a mile-long course where shooters aim at targets with game animals printed on them.

It didn't take long for Kendall to declare the open house a success, as within the first hour a half dozen newer shooters had brought their bows to try out the facilities.

"That's what we want to do," Kendall said. "We want to bring new people to the sport, and to the facility."

Between the range and field area, there are 25 targets, 11 in the practice area and 14 field stations. All weere built by volunteers, and funded through generous gifts.

Kendall said the Cabela's Outdoor Fund, to which customers contribute by "rounding up" the dollars on purchases, made a good donation that got the ball rolling. Adding to that, Morrell Targets donated "a bunch" of targets to the club, while 21st Century Equipment donated the use of equipment.
