CAPWN launches holiday food, coat drive

Community Action Partners of Western Nebraska in Sidney has launched a food drive and coat drive leading up to the holidays.

The non-profit helps people from Cheyenne, Kimball and Deuel counties, and takes referrals from Garden County, as well.

CAPWN's food pantry, at 2241 Illinois St., is in need of non-perishable goods, Lorilei Stark, family & youth stabilization coordinator, said.

"We order free items from the food bank in Omaha, but we are also requesting local families that are able to assist us, to donate non-perishable items to help with families in the community who need our services," Stark said.

The food pantry is seeking "just about anything."

"We take canned goods. We have freezers down here, so if they want to donate anything that needs to be frozen we can do that, as well. Dry goods," Stark said. "We always need pastas, instant mashed potatoes, the kind of thing that people can use."

Baby supplies are also welcome.

"We don't have a lot of call for it, but we are having some people come in recently who are due to have babies pretty soon," Stark said. "We can sure take those as well."

CAPWN is partnering again with Cabela's to provide coats for the needy. It is not certain, though, how many coats Cabela's will be able to provide this year.

"They brought us a bunch of coats last year. More than enough adult coats," she said. "But with the department cutbacks and everything up there I'm not sure how many we are going to get. It's just playing it by ear."

Coats are especially needed for children, Stark said, including toddlers and infants, as well as scarves, hats and gloves.

The need is great in Sidney, Stark said.

"Right now, with the situation going on with Cabela's, we have a lot of people who are really nervous about food and what's going to happen tomorrow," she said.

While CAPWN serves many older people, most of its clients are young families, Stark said, who need extra help.

Demand always increases during the holidays.

"I've already had several people come in and ask if we're going to do any holiday dinners," she said. "At this point I don't know if we are or not. I haven't had any feedback on people doing any donations for any holiday dinners."

Donations can be brought to CAPWN, which has both office and food pantry hours, at 2241 Illinois Street. CAPWN can be contacted at (308) 254-5856.
