Houk named to Kansas All-State Academic Team

Jessica Houk, a 2016 graduate of Leyton High School, is one of two students selected by Colby (Kansas) Community College to be on the 22nd annual Kansas All-State Academic Team.

Kansas is one of 38 states participating in the All-State Academic Team Program. The State Academic Teams were introduced in 1994 as a way to provide a scholastic recognition to Phi Theta Kappa members, while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. The State Academic Teams are a division of the ALL-USA Community College Academic Team, presented by USA TODAY, and sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa.

Each community college in Kansas can nominate two students to the All-Kansas Academic Team. As a member of the All-Kansas Team, Jessica will receive an honorary medallion and certificate, statewide recognition, a stipend to be used at the institution of her choice and a minimum $1,000 scholarship for students who enroll at Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Kansas University, Pittsburg State University, Wichita State University and Washburn University. Other colleges such as Baker, Benedictine, Bethany, Bethel, McPherson, Newman, Saint Mary, Southwestern, Sterling, Kansas Wesleyan, Mid America Nazarene and Tabor also provide generous scholarships to the nominees.

The scholarship will be applied to the next college Houk enrolls in.

Earlier this year, Houk was inducted into the Rho Iota, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Colby Community College. She also made the President's List for her first and second semesters and participated in track while working at the library.
