COMMUNITY GATHERS SUPPLIES FOR VICTIMS

Hurricane Harvey struck southeast Texas Friday and historic flooding has displaced thousands.

In response, Sidney VFW Post 610, Adams Trucking and Sidney Public Schools, along with Sidney’s businesses, are working together to send needed supplies to the storm victims.

“We are doing a cooperation of gathering supplies,” VFW Cmdr. Stephanie Dadgostar said. “(Adams is) going to do the transportation for us. The school is going to do a food drive and then Tuesday we will start collecting it.”

Adams will have a truck at the fairgrounds Tuesday through Thursday, from 4 to 8 p.m., to collect the donated goods and supplies.

The truck will then depart for Texas on Friday.

All items will go directly to the victims, Dadgostar said.

Sidney Public Schools is also helping to collect goods, and will take donations during Friday’s football game against Aurora.

LIBRARY DIGITAL ARCHIVE AVAILABLE ONLINE

Sidney Public Library’s online digital newspaper archive is now available.

Sidney and Cheyenne County area newspapers from as far back as 1875 can now be searched from the comfort of home.

“We get a lot of requests from people to find information in the old local newspapers we have on microfilm,” Andrew Sherman, library director, said, “and the issue we have is, if the person doesn’t have a good idea of the date or a fairly limited date range for us to search, with our staff, it’s just not practical for us.”

Instead of loading up a reel of film and scrolling, the online archives works like a search engine.

“You simply put in a person’s name, the event name, if you have an idea for the date to keep the results trimmed down, you can put in a date range. It will bring up every page from best match to worst match,” Sherman said. “What’s nice is, the key words you put in then on that page as you bring up that page to view it are highlighted so you can see where it matched.”

COMMUNITY SHEPHERDS AIM TO HELP DALTON-GURLEY AREA

DALTON - A new non-profit group has formed to help the Dalton and Gurley communities, and the surrounding area, in whatever way they need help.

The Dalton Community Shepherds gather in Dalton’s former Presbyterian Church, at 404 Francis St., in Dalton, and while they are personally motivated by their Christian faith, are a non-denominational entity.

“We’re here to do things like a church does, but we are not a church,” Jim Larson, group president, said, adding, “Whatever the community has a need for, we want to help with.”

Community Shepherds has an open membership.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CELEBRATES 100 YEARS IN SIDNEY

Light Memorial Presbyterian Church celebrated its 100th anniversary Sunday, September 10.

The Sidney church was formed Aug. 17, 1917, but wasn’t voted into the Presbytery of Box Butte until Sept. 11, 1917.

In its 100 year history, Light Memorial has had 12 pastors and eight interim pastors.

The church site has remained the same since 1917.
