Sidney Boys, Girls Win In Weekend Action

Both the Sidney boys and girls basketball teams won their last two games last week defeating the Chadron Cardinals and the Brush (CO) Beetdiggers on Friday and Saturday.

The wins raised the Lady Raiders record to 16-3 (4-1 in district), and the Red Raiders record to 12-7 (2-2 in district).

On Friday, the Chadron Cardinals traveled to Sidney for a conference matchup with the Red Raiders squads.

The first game pitted the Lady Raiders against the Lady Cardinals (9-7, 3-4 in district) which proved to be an overmatch for the visitors, falling behind early in the game 12-5 at the end of the first, and never offering a serious threat to the home team.

The Lady Cardinals were shut out in the second period and trailed Sidney 18-5 in a first half where both teams struggled to score.

The second half was higher scoring, but Chadron was unable to chip away at Sidney's lead. The final score was 41-20 in favor of the Lady Raiders with junior Katelyn Sylvester leading the scoring for Sidney with 11 points.

Next up, the boy's teams faced off in what proved to be a much closer contest. The Cardinals (7-9, 2-4 in district) hung tough against the Red Raiders offense, keeping the game close and ending the first quarter only down by three, 13-10.

Building on that success, the Cardinals turned up the intensity and were able to match the Red Raiders scoring, and by the end of the half led Sidney 23-22.

After a few halftime adjustments, the Red Raiders were able to contain the Cardinals offense more effectively and started to pull away from the visitors, ending the third quarter up 35-30.

The two teams battled in the fourth, but Chadron was unable to make up the ground they lost in the third quarter, and the Red Raiders ended the game with the victory, 50-43. Sidney senior Jake Burke led the scoring for the Red Raiders with 20 points.

On Saturday, it was Sidney's turn to hit the road as they faced the Brush (CO) Beetdiggers in non-conference action. The Lady Raiders endured a first half battle against the Lady Beetdiggers (7-7, 2-4 in league) with both teams playing tough defense and hitting timely shots.

The first quarter ended tied at 14, and the action continued into the second with Sidney slowly starting to take control of the game by changing up their defense and limiting the Lady Beetdiggers to only eight points against Sidney's 14 to end the half up 28-22.

The second half had the Lady Raiders coming out hot and scoring frequently, increasing the lead to 54-35 by the end of the third. Brush could not mount any kind of challenge in the fourth, and the Lady Raiders prevailed with a final score of 69 to 41. Sidney junior Janay Brauer led the scoring with 17 points.

The boy's teams faced off for the final game of the night, with the Red Raiders coming out hot against the Beetdiggers (9-5, 3-3 in league) putting up 24 points to Brush's 8 in the first quarter.

The Beetdiggers made some adjustments in the second period, putting up 17 points against the Red Raiders 10 to narrow the score to 34-25 at the half. However, after making their own adjustments at the half, Sidney was able to outpace the Beetdiggers in the second half, never allowing the home team a chance to make it a close game.

The final score ended in Sidney's favor, 73-49. Next up, Sidney travels to Gering on Friday night to once again take on their rivals to the northwest.
