Creek Valley, Leyton Square Off

Leyton and Creek Valley's varsity basketball teams squared off in Dalton to face off in a panhandle battle.

Creek Valley brought a large cheering section (dubbed "The Storm Chasers") with them and both games were highlighted by loud competing cheers from the home and visiting sections.

The girls' squads started the action, with the Lady Storm (8-8, 3-2 in district) facing the Lady Warriors (9-9, 2-3 in district) in what promised to be an evenly matched contest. It didn't start that way however, with Creek Valley jumping out to a 5-0 lead, and using a pressure defense that had Leyton struggling to even inbound the ball. But as the first half would down, both teams settled in and the game narrowed, with the Lady Storm leading 23-19 at the half. Leyton tried to battle back in the third, but were getting out rebounded and clearly struggled to get off clean shots. It seemed that every pass the Lady Warriors was at least tipped by the Lady Storm's swarming defense. Leyton hung in and ended the third quarter down 36-27, but still in the game.

The fourth quarter started with a Leyton possession, but Creek Valley's Payje Misegadis stole the ball and turned it into a fast-break score. Every Leyton score was met with a quick response by the Lady Storm, and the Lady Warriors started to take desperation shots in the final minutes of the game. The Lady Storm finished strong, and ended the night with a 50-41 victory. Creek Valley senior Payje Misegadis led the Lady Storm with 19 points.

The boys squads faced off next as the Warriors (4-12, 4-4 in district) started slowly against the Storm (8-8, 3-3 in district) falling behind 10-5 in a low scoring first period. This continued in the second quarter with both teams having trouble scoring until Creek Valley went on a run in the final minutes of the half to go 23-10 at the intermission.

The second half had Leyton scoring more often than Creek Valley, but the 13 point first half advantage was too much for the Warriors to overcome, and the final score ended in favor of the visiting Creek Valley team, 50-41. Creek Valley junior Tanner Crass led all scorers with 22 points on the night.
