Sidney Girls Ground Gering, Smother Scottsbluff Over Weekend

Both Gering and Scottsbluff have been unable to beat the Sidney Lady Raiders basketball team this season, and both were unsuccessful trying to change their fortunes over the weekend.

On Friday the Lady Raiders (18-3, 6-1 in district) travelled to Gering for their fourth meeting of the season against the Lady Bulldogs, and were ready for a fight at the Lady Bulldogs notoriously raucous home court.

"As (Gering) coach Freeburg said before the game, these teams know each other so well, each game is like a rock fight - whichever team hits more at the end wins," Sidney head coach Tyler Shaw said after the Lady Raiders defeated Gering at home on January 5.

The Lady Raiders came well prepared and ready for a shoot-out. The game started out very close, with both teams battling and ending the first period with Gering ahead, 13-12. But Sidney outscored Gering 13-8 in the second and held a four point advantage at halftime, leading 25-21. The third quarter continued in similar fashion, with Sidney matching Gering's scores and the third period ended with the Lady Raiders up by five, 32-27.

The fourth quarter had the Lady Bulldogs chipping away at Sidney's lead, until with just 1:40 left to play Gering had narrowed the Lady Raider's lead to just one point, 42-41. But after coming so close, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score any more points as their shooting went cold. Every shot they took either fell short, or bounced off of the rim while Sidney was able to put up five unanswered points in the closing moments of the game to come away with a 47-41 victory. Sidney junior Meaghan Ross led the scoring for the Lady Raiders with 18 points in the victory, marking the fourth victory this season over the Lady Bulldogs.

On Saturday, the Lady Raiders hosted the Scottsbluff Lady Bearcats (6-13, 3-4 in district) trying to sweep the two-game season series at home. After a slow start to the game that had both teams struggling to score, the Lady Raiders picked up the pace and by the end of the first period were up by a score of 14-7. After a slow start to the second period for Sidney, Scottsbluff had narrowed the Lady Raider's lead to two points, 16-14. But again, the Lady Raiders responded by going on a 11-5 run in the final minutes of the second period to make the score 27-19 at the half.

The third period continued with Sidney getting out to a fast start, but Scottsbluff responded late in the period, and was able to cut into the Lady Raider's lead ending the third period down by eight, 42-30. But Sidney opened the fourth period with six unanswered points, and continued to pull away as the period progressed. After Sidney sophomore Taylor Dormann hit a perfectly-executed reverse layup along the baseline to put Sidney up 55-34 in the final moments, the Lady Raiders cruised through the rest of the game and ended up winners with a final score of 57-41. Next up, the Lady Raiders travel to Chadron to take on the Lady Cardinals Feb. 9.
