Students Recognized By School Board

A half dozen Sidney Middle and Senior High School students received recognition by the Sidney School Board Monday in the Monthly Performance Award Program.

The Monthly Performance Award acknowledges student accomplishments for excellence not only in the classroom, but other areas as well. Those criteria include:

1. Superior academic performance, (or), dramatic improvement of classroom work, G.P.A. or attitude toward learning.

2. Exceptional work effort toward a particular class project.

3. Outstanding Contribution to the class.

4. Leadership exhibited in the class/school.

5. Citizenship emphasized and modeled.

6. Service to school.

Recognized for the January Performance Awards, with educator descriptions of their accomplishments, were:

7th Grade – Destiny Frye: Destiny Frye is the seventh grade student of the month for January.  Destiny is a new addition to Sidney Public Schools, and has made a flawless transition.  Destiny brought with her a great work ethic, a dedication to her studies, and leadership both in and out of the classroom.  Destiny confidently participates in the classroom and gives her best efforts in all she attempts.  She is a member of the middle school band and participated in volleyball.  Outside of school Destiny enjoys spending time with her horses, and hunting. She is the daughter of Sean Sutherland and Shelly Gerk of Sidney, and also Jeremiah Frye of Wasilla, Alaska.

8th Grade – Saria Calvin: Saria Calvin has been selected as the 8th-grade student of the month.  We have enjoyed Saria very much this year.  She is a very responsible and hardworking student. Her work ethic is amazing on her own, but is always willing to lend a hand to other students too.  Thank you, Saria, for being a great student and a leader in the classroom.  Keep working hard!  Saria is the daughter of Dan and Krystal Calvin.

9th Grade – Karly Sylvester: Karly was selected because of academic performance, classroom effort, and leadership ability. She works very hard each day and is willing to ask questions and spend the time needed to make sure she does well at each task given to her. She works well with others in & out of class time. Karly has participated in basketball, volleyball, track & field, student council, Spanish club, and youth group at church. Her future plans are undecided as of now. Karly is the daughter of Eric & Jill Sylvester.

10th Grade – Chesly Lara Mendez: Chesly's nomination was based on her academic performance, effort & leadership. She is one of the hardest working students in the high school. She cares greatly about succeeding and doing well academically. She is very polite and friendly to her peers and has made great progress over the past two years. She is a member of Journey Through Our Heritage, Track, and Art Club. She works at Tres Margaritas. She also loves to read and draw in her spare time. Her future plans are to attend college to become a psychologist, and would also like to serve in the army. Chesly's parents are Benjamin & Vanessa Skinner.

11th Grade – K.C. Higer: K.C. was nominated because of classroom effort, good attitude, and dramatic improvement. He is a very hard working student in the classroom & out. He is doing a great job and takes pride in what he does. His effort has improved and it shows in his grades. K.C. is a member of the Wrestling team. In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing, and trap. He also works at the feed yard. He plans on joining the Marine Corps after graduations. K.C. is the son of Serena Ballance.

12th Grade – Jared Nation: Jared was nominated for his academic performance, classroom effort & attitude. One of his strong subjects is Psychology. He listens intently, applies himself, works hard, communicates, asks questions, and gives his full effort. He has participated in football and Legion baseball. Jared plans on attending college to study Psychology and earn his Master's degree in Counseling Psychology. Jared's parents are Jeff & Brenda Smith.
