Sidney Wrestlers Shine At State

LINCOLN - Sidney High School wrestlers posted their best showing at the state tournament in more than 20 years over the weekend, finishing in a tie for fourth as a team and bringing home four individual medals.

From the onset, the Raiders showed they were there to compete, landing atop the team scoreboard after the opening day behind the strength of five pins.

"We got some big points in the first round," said Sidney Coach John Ganser. "We had some quarterfinal losses that were tough, but the kids were able to bounce back."

Three Sidney wrestlers earned spots in the Parade of Champions, where finalists enter the arena prior to championship matches.

Sidney senior Derek Robb, wrestling in the second set of matches, got the team off to a good start in the 152-pound championship. Just seconds into the final, Robb scored a take down and rode out his opponent for the remainder of the period. Starting from the down position in the second period, Robb escaped and added another take down to maintain control on the way to a 13-4 decision.

The win made Robb the winningest Raider in school history, and the first four-time state champion.

Raider Kaden Vowers, wrestling at 126 pounds, had the marathon match of the finals, going four extra periods before a last-second move ended the match.

Adding to the marathon mat time, Vowers opponent, Nicholas Stoltenberg, suffered a bloody nose early in the match. Unable to contain the injury, Vowers' opponent forced regular halts in the action to clean up the wrestlers and mat.

Despite the constant interruptions in the action, Vowers remained on the offensive, scoring two of his regulation match points on stalls.

With the score tied 3-3 at the end of regulation, the wrestlers were scoreless in the first overtime, and each scored an escape in the ensuing overtime periods to set up the final challenge, the Ultimate Tiebreaker. In it Vowers' opponent, who scored the match's first offensive points, got choice if the up or down position. From there the rule was, if Vowers rode it out or scored, he would win. If his opponent escaped, the win would go to him.

Showing the same tenacity he had all match, Vowers worked to control an opponent which had already proven adept at moving away. As the buzzer sounded, Stoltenberg, who had worked up to his feet, squirmed just enough out of Vowers' grasp that, after discussion between the referees, was enough to be called an escape.

In Sidney's final match, 132-pound Trey Arellano found himself in a similarly tough match, with Scottsbluff's Manual Yberra, but with better results.

The Panhandle pair sparred without either taking advantage through the first period. After taking the down position in the second period, Arellano successfully scored an escape. In the third, he salvaged his lead by holding Yberra in the down position, scoring his second straight state championship with a 1-0 win.

Also coming home with a medal was Brody Raines. Sidney's 138 pounder finished sixth at 138 pounds, and scored three of Sidney's 10 tournament pins.

Three other Raiders qualified for the state tournament as well. Colton Peckham suffered an injury before going to the tournament, while Jacob Peckham and Jack Hinrichs were unable to reach into the medal rounds.
