Leyton School Solves Staffing Puzzle

After wrestling with the decision for a couple of months, the Leyton School Board this month voted on its RIF (Reduction in Force) Plan.

Faced with the possibility of cutting more than three teachers and several classes to become more efficient, the board chose to drop one-half of a special education position for next year. That means one of Leyton’s two special education teachers next year will be half time.

As for the remainder of needed cuts, those will be accomplished through attrition, said Interim Superintendent Lori Miller, with positions remaining unfilled afterward to meet the school’s goals.

In the meantime, the school continues to work on contracts, which are due by April 15. Miller will be making teaching assignments with some changes to maximize potential for student benefit. She said as part of the process, teacher endorsements are being reviewed to make sure class requirements are met.

Two other changes to the Leyton educational lineup for next year is the addition of a part time elementary principal and a new superintendent.

Miller, hired by the district in an interim capacity, is retiring, and Chris Geary will take over as Leyton superintendent. He is currently the principal at Crawford High School.
