Gurley Lions Club Sponsors Hearing and Vision Tests

The Statewide Services Arm of the Nebraska Lions Foundation stopped in Gurley and Dalton on Thursday to conduct annual Hearing and Vision Testing for the Leyton School District.

Since 1987, the Lions Club has sponsored the screening for over 700,000 students in Nebraska, including over 27,000 students this year alone.

In partnership with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and with help from five volunteers from Farm Credit Services of America, Allen Darell of the Nebraska Lions Foundation conducted the screening, which is free of charge to the school. The program is funded by the Lions Club and Blue Cross/Blue Shield along with contributions from private individuals throughout the state.

Allen Darrel of the Nebraska Lions Foundation out of Omaha conducts the program throughout the state, and can attest to the effectiveness of the program.

"The hearing and vision numbers are improving year after year with the help of this program," Darrel said.

The students' hearing is tested with headphones and a computer program that measures the range of sound the students can hear, and is able to identify any deficiencies which allows the students to take the necessary steps to address any medical issues that may be affecting their hearing.

The vision testing uses Welch Allyn vision screening equipment that has the advantage of being portable and easy to use, while measuring a student's vision while they sit in a chair a few feet away from the hand-held device.
