Local Students Qualify For State Speech Competition

Potter-Dix and Leyton High Schools won their respective divisions in district speech contests last week, as each local school qualified at least one student for this week's State Speech Championships. The district contests were held at Sidney High School.

Leyton won the D1-6 title while qualifying students in eight categories. Leyton actors earned gold medals in three areas. Janessa Carley won both Persuasive Speaking and Informative Public Speaking, while the team of Paige Ernest and Sierra Nickel won in Duet Acting.

Also earnng state berths were Joshua Kruse with his second place finish in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Shelby Miller with second in Oral Interpretation of Poetry. Leyton also qualified two teams in Oral Interpretation of Drama, with David George, Andrew Haley, Danielle Higgins and Kruse finishing second, and the team of Abbagale Busch, Carissa Fostervold, Cassey Murray and Hannah Vath in third.

Also qualifying for state in the D1-6 District was Creek Valley junior Jordan Koenen, who was third in Informative Public Speaking.

Potter-Dix continued in dominance in the D2-6 District, winning the title while qualifying students for state in all but two categories.

Potter-Dix won four of the nine speaking areas. Audrey Juelfs won Serious Interpretation of Prose Literature, Reagan Williams was first in Entertainment Speaking, and Michaela Rotert won Informative Public Speaking. Juelfs teames with Brooke Moench to win Duet Acting.

Potter-Dix also qualified Hannah Stahl (second in Humorous Interpretation of Prose Literature), Virgina Herboldsheimer (third in Extemporaneous Speaking), Jessica Gingerich (third in Oral Interpretation of Poetry) and Joshua Hutchinson, who was third in Entertainment Speaking.

Two groups from Sidney High School qualified for state by winning their competitions, in Oral Interpretation of Drama (Jakob Austad, Carolyn Jones, Clara Kokjer, Quinn Siler and Kollyn Weimer), and Duet Acting (Haile Christifferson and Karli Christofferson.

State qualifiers begin competition tomorrow for class A, B and C1 on the University of Nebraska-Kearney campus. Classes C2, D1 and D2 compete Friday.
