Commissioners Interview Tourism Director Candidates

The Cheyenne County Commissioners Monday were busy trying to fill the position of Tourism Director, interviewing five candidates in a public meeting.

Tourism Director Heather Hausmann has resigned. Her last day on the job is Friday.

The candidates brought with them a wide variety of experiences including a new college graduate, former Cabela’s employees, one applicant with extensive marketing and sales experience, a man with extensive tourism experience and local candidates with first-hand knowledge of Cheyenne County attractions.

Questions asked of the candidates ranged from identifying their strengths and weaknesses, why they are interested in the position, how they handle difficult people and situations, comfort with adhering to a budget and long-term goals. Three of the five interviewed Monday afternoon are from Cheyenne County.

After the meeting Monday afternoon, the commissioners convened in an executive session to review the interviews. The applicants were told a decision would be made that afternoon, or by the next commissioners meeting.

After the interviews, the commissioners said they are looking for a Tourism Director who is good with making a budget, and is a strong people person.

In other business, the commissioners are continuing the county’s relationship with Regional West ambulance service. However, the contract will be amended, according to Commissioner Randal Miller. The

commissioners, county attorney Paul Schaub and Regional West representatives discussed specifics in the draft, including the county helping provide a staff house for Regional West to rent. The proposed agreement also calls for a “first right of refusal”. According to the discussion, this would prevent “cherry picking” between two agencies when a call is dispatched.

No action was taken Monday on the ambulance agreement. An amended proposal will be presented at a future commissioners meeting for consideration.
