Coyotes Fall in Season Opener

Potter-Dix's Coyote Football team opened their season at home on Friday, but the Hay Springs Hawks came to town and quickly dashed any hopes the Coyotes had for starting their season with a win.

The Hawks struck quickly, scoring a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.

The Coyotes were able to get pressure on the extra point attempt, and blocked the kick to keep the score at 6-to-0 in favor of the visitors. That was one of the very few highlights as the Coyotes could not stop the speed and size of the Hawks offense, and could not contain the pressure the Hay Springs defense applied on every play.

Potter-Dix head coach Dale Frerichs knew his team would be challenged by the visitors, as Hay Springs is considered a top-tier team in the conference. Coach Frerichs said, "Hay Springs is an experienced, top five team in six-man football, and is a tough first opponent."

The Hawks speed and experience were evident as they racked up 48 unanswered points in the first half, and then 20 more in the second half on their way to an impressive 68-to-6 final score. Potter-Dix sophomore Donnie Moench provided the Coyotes with their lone score, rushing for a touchdown as the fourth quarter wound down.

Coach Frerichs commented, "I don't think the final score reflected on how much better we performed against them than in the past. I felt that we were more physical and was especially pleased with how we handled things mentally and emotionally."

The Coyotes need to put their opening loss behind them as they prepare to to travel to Crawford to take on the Rams in their home opener on Friday.

Coach Frerichs is counting on his team staying focused and continuing to battle for a win, saying "These young men have shown tremendous growth this off season and preseason and if we continue on that growth trajectory, we are due for a breakout."
