The Sidney City Council recently approved an application for the Oktoberfest Parade.
The parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 6. The route this year is on Illinois Street from Nineteenth to Seventh Streets. The parade is held in conjunction with the Oktoberfest celebration and marching band celebration.
The event also needs approval from the Department of Transportation since Illinois Street is also Nebraska State Highway 30.
The council also held a public hearing for the completion of the Lukjan Metal Products project. The project was funded by a Community Development Block Grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. The City of Sidney received $1,005,000. The funds were used for the purchase of the Lukjan building. In all, $1.7 million in matching funds were committed from Lukjan, a bank, and LB840 funds. The Aug. 28 hearing was held as a requirement for the completion of the project. Jeff Kelley, representing Nebraska Panhandle Area Development District (PADD), was present at the public hearing.
“They’ve created 40 new jobs, retained 38,” Kelley said.
City Manager Ed Sadler said the agreement includes Lukjan pay back $200,000.
In other business, the city council approved two requests for truck parking in the city. Dennis Charles, 1220 Rose St., and Caleb Jurgensen, 1321 Newton, petitioned to park their trucks at the residences. Each told the council only the truck of the truck-trailer will be parked at the residence. Both said parking at the residence will not be a habit, “just once in a while.
