It was cold outside but the heat was on in the Potter-Dix gym as the Lady Coyotes faced the Creek Valley Lady Storm on a Friday homecoming night. The Lady Coyotes came into the contest favored against the Lady Storm, a team that plays well as a unit but has struggled to earn wins this season, and started off the first set with an 8-to-4 lead against the visitors. But the Lady Storm hung in and kept battling, eventually tying the score at 22 in front of a raucous crowd. Potter-Dix took a timeout to try to break Creek Valley’s momentum, but the Lady Storm would not be denied and pulled out the first set 25-to-22, silencing the home crowd.
The second set was another battle, as Potter-Dix tried to pull away from the visitors with their height advantage, but the Lady Storm still wouldn’t quit, keeping volleys alive with saves off the net and taking advantage of every Lady Coyote miscue. The set went back and forth until Potter-Dix head coach Cory Michelman called a timeout at 21-to-20 to refocus his squad. The tactic worked, as Potter-Dix was able to put away the Lady Storm 25-to-23 to even the match a 1 set each.
The third set was another close battle early on, until Potter-Dix started to pull away as the Lady Storm went through a stretch of points where they couldn’t return a serve. Creek Valley’s head coach Kelsey Kurth called a timeout at 18-to-12 to try to stop the Lady Coyotes momentum, but the Creek Valley girls had fallen too far behind, and dropped the third set 25-to-17.
Prior to the fourth set, Potter-Dix coach Cory Michelman fired up his team, telling the girls “We’re going to end this in four sets! We’re better than this team, and now it’s time to prove it!”
His pep talked worked, as the Lady Coyotes opened up an early lead and never looked back. The Lady Storm were able to narrow the score late, but it was too little, too late as Potter-Dix took the fourth set 25-to-17, winning the match 3 sets to 1, and sending the Coyote faithful home with a victory to savor. Sophomore Kelsey Hoffman and senior C.C. George led the way for the Lady Coyotes in the victory.
Creek Valley was next scheduled to travel to Dalton on Tuesday to take on the Leyton Lady Warriors, while Potter-Dix was scheduled to travel on Tuesday up to Kimball to face the Lady Longhorns.
