Student discipline, Internet and computer access and student bullying policies were discussed in Monday’s Sidney Public School Board of Education meeting.
The student discipline policy defines that students who violate school rules will face disciplinary consequences that may include expulsion from school. The policy further states that the school board will not consider an appeal of discipline unless the student and his or her family have first complied with procedures defined in the student handbook.
Students who are short-term suspended will be given the opportunity to complete class work. Changes made to the policy include consequences for inappropriate classroom behavior not limited to cheating or plagiarism.
In the Student Internet and Computer Access policy, most of the policy was kept intact. The change is in the definition of using email, chat rooms, instant messaging or other forms of direct electronic communication on school computers “for any unauthorized or unlawful purpose or in violation of any school policy or directive.”
The policy clarifies that the District monitors all internet communication, Internet usage and patterns of Internet use. Students have no right of privacy when using school computers, Internet communications or other electronic files. The policy says any electronic files on the District system are subject to search and inspection at any time.
Violation of the policy can result in loss of computer privileges, short-term suspension, long-term suspension or expulsion or other disciplinary measures as the school administration and school board deem necessary.
Student bullying was also addressed. The policy defines bullying according to the Centers for Disease Control as “any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings or current dating partners that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be physical, verbal or electronic abuse.”
The board discussed why there is an apparent exemption for siblings and dating partners. Sidney High School Principal Chris Arndt said school already has a policy addressing conduct between dating partners.
The board also approved an overnight travel request for the Danz Team to compete at the State Danz competition. In Grand island Feb. 14-16.
The board also discussed an Early Graduation request.
