Peetz 3-0 With Win Over Leyton

Starting the season with three wins in a row, the Peetz Bulldogs boy's basketball team traveled to Dalton Thursday night to take on a Leyton Warrior team searching for a more effective offensive attack.

Peetz opened the game fast, showcasing the athleticism of seniors Bryson Long, Dominic Naegele, and Zach Holtz while opening a 16-to-2 lead at the 2:21 mark of the first period. As the game moved in to the second quarter, both teams were plagued by sloppy play, with turnovers, fouls, and poor passing combining to slow the scoring. Leyton implemented an agressive defensive scheme to slow the Bulldogs by causing turnovers, but the Warriors could not turn their defensive success into points, and continued to fall behind against the fast-break offense and sharp outside shooting of the Peetz squad.

This pattern continued in the second half, with Peetz putting up 17 points in the third quarter to the Warriors five, putting the game out of reach. Leyton was able to outscore the Bulldogs 14-to-13 during the fourth quarter when Peetz relied on their substitutes to finish out the contest. Although on the wrong side of the 60-to-34 final score, the Leyton defense played well, limiting the Bulldogs to only 60 total points, which is a positive considering the defending state champion Peetz teams high-scoring ability.

Leyton sophomore Dominick Russ led the Warriors with 11 points on the night, while sophomore Zach Henke pulled down 12 total rebounds in the loss. Leyton was scheduled to travel to Potter to take on the Potter-Dix Coyotes, while Peetz is scheduled to host the Haxtun Bulldogs Tuesday night.
