Coyotes Struggle Starting 2019

Potter-Dix’s Coyote boy’s basketball team returned to action on Friday and Saturday, but could not find the right formula to earn their first win of the season.

The Coyotes traveled to Bayard Thursday night, and quickly fell behind the high-powered Tigers offense that would go on to put up 38 points in the first half.

“We knew going into the game that we would have some rust that we would have to quickly shake off coming into the game with just one practice. I thought we came out well, we took care of the ball and made some good hustle plays, especially in the first quarter,” Potter-Dix head coach Ryan Mumm said.

The Coyotes battled well, but were overmatched by the Tigers who pulled away for good in the second quarter on their way to a 70-to-20 victory.

“In the second quarter, the team lost focus for a short time, missed some shots we normally make, and gave up some easy transition points. Only having nine players suited up hurt in the second half as we couldn’t keep up with their overall team speed, “ added Mumm.

The Coyotes would get another chance to get in the victory column Saturday as they hosted the South Platte Blue Knights, a team that has not lived up to its’ potential this season.

The Coyotes started well, keeping up with the Blue Knights in the early stages of the game, but missed too many scoring opportunites and ended the first period down 15-to-7.

The Coyotes came up short defensively and the Blue Knight put up 18 points in the quarter to take a commanding 33-to-16 lead into the half. A big third quarter by the Blue Knights sealed the game for good, as the South Platte defense limited the Coyotes to just four points in the quarter, leading to a 61-to-22 loss for the Coyotes.

“Although I don’t think we played up to our potential, there were some positives that the team can build on for the upcoming games this season.” coach Mumm said.

Potter-Dix was scheduled to travel to Kimball on Tuesday to take on the Longhorns.
