Peetz Girls Drop Two

Peetz’s Lady Bulldog basketball team entered the 2019 portion of their schedule looking for their first win, and drew two tough competitors to start their first week back in action. Friday January 4 had the Lady Bulldogs travel to Briggsdale to face the number two state-ranked Lady Falcons. After a few early scores by Peetz sophomore Kayleigh Leek, the game quickly got out of hand for the Peetz girls as the Lady Falcons scored at will and held the Lady Bulldogs to just six points to end the first period 27-to-6 for the home team.

The Lady Bulldogs had a much better third quarter, and although the Lady Falcons scored 21 points, the Peetz girls put up 11 of their own.

“After making a few adjustments at half time, we were able to come out and have a pretty good quarter offensively by getting Kenna Pultz open looks from behind the arc, finding Kayleigh (Leek) for a few open looks and finally getting Caroline Lindahl to go back up with ball and score off of a rebound,” said Peetz head coach Stephanie Weber.

Briggsdale went on to coast to a 64-to-27 victory, but Weber was pleased with her girls performance, saying, “As lopsided as the score looked for an outsider, I was very pleased with how our team played. They were able to come out and execute the game plan fairly well, an it’s great to see the girls get into a game and do the things that we have been working so hard on in practice.”

“We were running our offense, seeing the open looks, making better decisions with the ball, and hustling after loose balls. It was the best “team” game we have had all season”, she added.

Leek led the Peetz scoring with 14 points in the loss.

On Saturday, Peetz hosted the Merino Lady Rams, and fell into trouble early against Merino’s press defense and had trouble scoring, but the Lady Bulldogs were sharp on defense as well, holding the high-scoring Lady Rams to only 11 first quarter points. But the Peetz defense began to falter as the Lady Rams started to gain traction and started scoring in bunches, eventually ending the half up 33-to-10 against the Lady Bulldogs.

“We simply do not have a true point guard to handle to pressure that so many teams put on us via the press,” said Weber.

The Lady Rams went on to put up 24 more points in the second half against only six for the Lady Bulldogs, ending up with a 57-to-16 victory. Leek again led the Lady Bulldogs with seven points in the loss.

“We played good defense the first quarter and held them to only 11 points. We slipped in the second quarter and allowed them to score 22 on us,” said Weber.

Weber remained optimistic, saying, “There were positives that I see as a coach that aren’t as noticeable to others. There are so many things we work hard on in practice that are finally starting to see them transition into the games.

Peetz was scheduled to face Fleming on the road Thursday.
