Sidney Teacher Among Hall of Fame Honorees

A Sidney teacher is among those being recognized for their outstanding contributions to sports as members of the 26th induction class selected by the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation.

Jennifer (Warner) Ramsey, a media specialist with Sidney Public Schools, is being recognized for her achievements while at St. Paul and Greeley High Schools. While at the schools, she led each school to a state basketball championship.

As a freshman (Warner) Ramsey led her team in Greeley to the championship and earned all-state honors. Ironically, in Sidney Ramsey now lives just down the road from Potter-Dix, which her team knocked off for the championship.

In her junior and senior years (Warner) Ramsey played for St. Paul, where her teams took second in 1992 and first in 1993. She earned All-Nebraska honors at St. Paul. During her high school years she also lettered in volleyball and track.

After high school, (Warner) Ramsey played basketball two years for Iowa State and two years at UNK, where she was an NCAA Division II All-American and two-time conference player of the year.

Ramsey said she is "fortunate" to be honored as a Hall of Fame member, but said it really didn't hit her until she saw the list of honorees.

"I'm honored to be a part of this year's impressive list of inductees," she said, referring to the big names on the list.

And what a list it is. Ramsey is part of the same Hall of Fame class as Scott and Larry Frost and Danny Woodhead.

Frost, who is now the University of Nebraska football coach, was a standout at Wood River High School, where he graduated in 1993. Frost had more than 10,000 yards of total offense in football and was also a gold medalist in the 300-meter hurdles and shot put.

Frost's father, Larry, graduated from Malcom in 1965. He set a national record with 121 career touchdowns and also set school records in basketball and track before going on to standout in his football career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Woodhead twice won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in NCAA Division II while at Chadron State. He then played nine seasons in the NFL.

Also to be honored are athletes Damon Benning, Andrea Conner, Aaron Golliday, Jenny Green, Jina (Johansen) Douglas, Sheila (Miller) Estes, Richie Ross, and Colby Wissel; coaches Doug Denson, Gwen Egbert, Jack Guggenmos, Curt Shockey and Tim Turman; contributors Hub Foster and Gene Haynes; and official Joe Wells.

The new Hall of Fame members will be inducted during ceremonies Sept. 22 at Lincoln East High School.

Tickets to the induction ceremony are $25 for adults and $10 for K-12 students. Pre-kindergarten children are admitted for no charge. Tickets will be available through the Nebraska Sports Council in Lincoln.
