Firework Safety

With the approach of the Fourth of July and the fireworks fun that come with it, the Sidney Police Department reminds residents of tips to enjoy fireworks safely.

The police department wants to remind people that fireworks may be shot off during the week prior to the 4th of July, until 10 p.m. each day. On the Fourth, fireworks can be shot until midnight, and then on July 5 until 10 p.m.

Other safety tips from the department:

- Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and follow instructions before lighting.

- A responsible adult should supervise ALL fireworks activities. NEVER give fireworks to children

- Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles. Be aware of wind direction and nearby danger areas such as dry grassy areas, wheat fields or flammable debris.

- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show.

- ALWAYS have a bucket of water and a hose nearby and ready to use.

- NEVER carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers.

- NEVER throw fireworks AT vehicles, NEAR vehicles or FROM vehicles.

- PLEASE dispose of your fireworks properly. Spent fireworks should be wet down and placed in a metal trash can away from buildings or combustible materials until the next day. DO NOT put fireworks into dumpsters until they have completely cooled. PLEASE be mindful of your friends and neighbors by cleaning up after yourself!

The department also reminds people that the 4th of July can be challenging to pets, and asks residents to be mindful of them as they set of fireworks.

- Please remember that fireworks can be terrifying for our pets, please be considerate when lighting fireworks and keep them far away from animals.

- Keep your pets indoors in a safe room, minimize the noise as much as possible

- Make sure that your pet has ID tags on so that they may be returned safely to you if they do try to run away.
