Legion Juniors Cruise Against Gordon-Rushville

The American Legion Junior Post 17 baseball team hosted the Gordon-Rushville Post 34 Regulator Junior team on Wednesday, and jumped out to an early lead the visitors could not overcome to earn a 12-to-4 victory.

Sawyer Dickman started the game with two quick outs, and after an error on a ground ball to shortstop put a runner on first,got the Regulator’s clean up hitter to pop out to end the inning.

The Sidney offense quickly jumped on starter Ellis Livingston, stringing together two singles and a walk to get runners in scoring position. After Ethan Reichman struck out for the second out, it looked like the Post 17 juniors might come away empty in the first. But Sidney took advantage of an error on a ground ball by Grant Campbell and then a hit batsman followed by singles by Mason Mowry and Jaeden Dillehay to jump out to a 7-to-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

The Regulators were able to scratch out a few runs in the middle innings, but Sidney stopped any chance of a Gordon-Rushville comeback by scoring five runs over the last three innings to seal the victory. Sawyer Dickman went five innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts. Four Sidney players had two RBI’s each in the victory, with Sam Hashman leading the way with two hits, two runs, two RBI’s, and two walks in the game.

Juniors Fall to Westco

On Monday, the Juniors traveled to Scottsbluff to face the Westco Express Juniors, and fell just short in a comeback attempt and dropped the game by a score of 6-to-5. Sidney was able to jump out to a quick 1-to-0 lead in the first inning on a Micah Schneider single to right field, but Westco was able to score two runs in the second inning of of Sidney starter Luke Kasten to take a one run lead.

The Express touched up Kasten for three more runs in the third on a two RBI double then a single to take a 5-to-1 lead after three. But Sidney started to climb back in the top of the fourth with Ben Hashman scoring on a passed ball to narrow the lead to 5-to-2.

Kasten was able to pitch around two singles in the bottom of the frame to keep the Express off the board, then Sidney was able to add two more runs in the top of the fifth to get within one, 5-to-4. After shutting down Westco in the bottom of the fifth, Sidney tied the game in the top of the sixth when Grant Campbell was able to score from third on an error. After a single and a stolen base, Westco’s Hunter Garcia drove an RBI single into the outfield to give the Express the lead at 6-to-5.

Sidney got arunner on base with a walk in the top of the seventh, but was unable to score the run and the game ended in Westco’s favor, 6-to-5. Luke Kasten went 5.1 innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Kasten also had three hits and scored two runs in the loss.
