Seniors Sunk by Buckley

The Sidney American League Post 17 Senior baseball team has struggled all season with giving up the big inning, and it cost them again last Tuesday as they fell to the visiting Border League Buckley Bombers 5-to-1.

After a brief rain delay, the Senior starting pitcher Zach Holtz took the mound and quickly retired the side in order. Buckley starting pitcher Braydon Lapp returned the favor by setting down the Sidney batters in order to end the first with no score, and set the tone for the game.

In the second inning, a single, walk, then a sacrifice bunt moved Jesus Trejo to third base, and then he scored on a passed ball to give the Bombers their first run of the game. A pitcher's duel ensued, with neither team able to score and Holtz inducing the Bombers into ground outs and fly outs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Holtz walked the lead off batter, then an error on a bunt by third baseman Jackson Witt gave the visitors runners on the corners with no outs. After Holtz fanned Ryan Chaleen, he had hit his pitch limit and was replaced by left-hander Tommy Ellwanger.

Ellwanger had good movement on his breaking pitches, but the Bombers were dialed in and delivered two hits and drove home four runs by the end of the inning, giving Buckley a 5-to-0 lead.

Sidney went down in order in the fifth and sixth, with Buckley's Braydon Lapp dominating the Senior offense. In the top of the seventh after Buckley put two men on base with no outs, Lapp hit an infield fly that turned into a triple play, with the last out at third as the runner from second tried to tag up.

But the momentum from the triple play only translated into one run for Sidney in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball, and the Bombers took the victory 5-to-1. Holtz pitched 4.1 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts, while Lapp went the distance for Buckley, giving up no earned runs in seven innings of no-hit baseball.
