OHD Wins 'Great Trash Race'

On Saturday morning, the annual "Great Trash Race" event sponsored by Keep Sidney Beautiful had 25 volunteers working hard to keep Sidney clean and trash-free. Keep Sidney Beautiful is one of 22 Nebraska affiliates of the Keep America Beautiful program, and since its inception in 2002 has focused on reducing litter, promoting recycling, and coordinating beautification projects in the Sidney community.

Keep Sidney Beautiful Board Member Nick Hays explained, "since 2006 we've held an annual "Great Trash Race" here in Sidney, and we always get a good number of volunteers to participate. The volunteers are organized into groups, and there's a fun competition to see who collects the most trash and prizes are given to the winners."

This year, according to Sidney Chamber of Commerce Coordinator and Keep Sidney Beautiful Executive Director Emma Sherman, 82 bags of trash weighing an estimated 1640 pounds were collected from locations on Link 17J, Fort Sidney Road, and Old Post Road. The Office of Human Development (OHD) team were the winners with 72 bags of trash collected, while the Unified Raiders team came in second place.
