Lady Coyotes Bite Hyannis 3-1

After splitting against Paxton and Wauneta Palisade last Tuesday, the Lady Coyotes faced the Hyannis Lady Longhorns in meet action on Friday.

A tough 25-to-23 25-to-22 victory over Paxton was followed by a loss to a strong Wauneta Palisade team in straight sets, 25-to-17 and 25-to-11. Potter-Dix Head Coach Cory Michelman regrouped his team and got them prepared to take on Hyannis.

After opening with a quick lead to start Friday's match, Potter-Dix put up good sets and were able to find soft spots in the Lady Longhorn's defense. But after pulling away with a comfortable lead, the visitors put together a rally, and narrowed the score. What was a big lead for Potter-Dix turned into a close set, with the Lady Coyotes finally putting the visitors away with a first set victory 25-to-17.

In the second set, Potter-Dix started off a bit sloppy, and Hyannis pulled out to a quick 4-to-1 lead. The set was a near mirror image of the first set, with Hyannis opening a comfortable lead, only to have Potter-Dix storm back on the strength of blocks by freshman Jayden Shoemaker and sophomore Kendal Nielsen. But the Lady Coyotes could not overcome their difficulties with setting and hitting and service errors, and dropped the second set 25-to-18.

The third set started with junior Mikayla Lee breaking an early Hyannis run with a reverse drop shop. Hyannis kept the pressure on, but after a long point with multiple saves by both teams, Potter-Dix pulled out a point after Hyannis hit into the net to pull the score to 2-to-6. Potter-Dix then fought back, battling and taking points until they tied the set at 8-to-8 with an ace serve.

Hyannis was again able to build a lead, but the Lady Coyotes fought back and tied the set again at 17 with an ace serve by Lee. Potter-Dix then capitalized on a series of service and hitting errors, and took the third set 25-to-21.

Potter-Dix started the fourth set well, building a 4-to-1 lead only to have Hyannis come back and tie the set at 5-to-5. The teams battled back and forth through the remainder of the set, as the two evenly matched teams played to their advantages.

Hyannis seemed to have the edge in size, while the Lady Coyotes had an advantage in speed while both teams battled for each point. A kill that hit then took a fortunate roll over the net by Lee broke a 19-to-19 tie for the Lady Coyotes, and they never trailed again, finishing the match with an ace serve by Lee for the 25-to-21 set win, and a 3-to-1 match victory.
