'Sherm' Resigns from Sidney Library

He's a familiar face in the literary community. He's not always outspoken, but known for his thoughtful words and excitement for blending bound books and new technology.

Andrew "Sherm" Sherman and his family moved to Sidney for the opportunity to work in the Sidney Public Library. It was a big change from living in Omaha and his experience in the IT end of the business world. The draw to Sidney as a family move. His wife, Tammy, had a love for the sandhills, and of teaching. He had a desire to be challenged.

They both found their passions living in Sidney.

Tammy lost her battle with cancer early this year.

While the loss has caused grief in the family, it has also allowed Sherm to look at new opportunities. He said with his daughters grown, and the passing of his wife, he thought it is time for a change.

"This a really neat job," he said. "It is just an opportunity to get outside of my comfort zone."

He said he is not so much leaving Sidney as pursuing new opportunities.

"I love Sidney; great community, great library," he said.

He has accepted a position with the Simsbury, Conn., library.

"I will be one of the technology leaders," he said.

He said the move brings together his past and present experience.

"It just a really big fit for my experience," he said.

Sidney is his first job as a head librarian. It is a four-year experience of enjoying the community, the library and the environment. Prior to Sidney, he was an IT coordinator.

"I've enjoyed it (Sidney Library) so much I went back and got my master's degree," he said.

His last day at Sidney Public Library was Friday, Oct. 18.
