On Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Cheyenne County 4-H Achievement Banquet, Sean Syverson of Dalton was presented a Quilt of Valor.
Several years ago, Cheyenne County Extension Office applied for a Quilt of Valor Kit through the Nebraska 4-H program. With the help of local 4-H'ers and Micahla Beyer who helped construct the quilt and Cynthia Gill who completed and did the quilting on the blanket, the Quilt of Valor was ready to be presented.
It was a simple task to choose such a deserving veteran and great 4-H volunteer. E5 Sgt. Shawn Syverson was an Army Apache helicopter mechanic and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kent., and Fort Riley, Kan.
Sgt. Syverson enlisted in the Army in February of 2002. He did three tours to Iraq for a total of 39 months and served for 10 years in the service.
During the 10 years of service, Shawn received many service awards: The Army Achievement Medal, 2 - Meritorious Unit Commendation, Valorous Unit Award, 2 - Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, 3 Overseas Ribbon, and the Combat Action Badge.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organization founded in 2003 by "Blue Star" mom Catherine Roberts. With a son deployed in Iraq, a 'Gunner' sitting atop a Humvee she felt "only 10 seconds away from panic." She had this vision of a post deployed warrior struggling with his war demons at 2 in the morning. She saw him sitting on the side of his bed wrapped in a quilt. The quilt not only comforted him but warded off the demons. Thus the QOVF was founded. The Quilts of Valor Foundation's mission is to cover ALL combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Since its founding, Quilts of Valor has awarded more than 231,000 quilts to veterans of military actions, conflicts and wars, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Each Quilt of Valor is formed by loving hands joining bits of fabric together one piece at a time.
