Commissioners Approve Weed Superintendent Increase

The Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners approved renewing the weed control contract with Cris Burks with an increase of almost 6 percent.

“We have not raised it in two years,” said Burks. “This is for 2020.”

Burks is working with a contract of about $53,000. With the approved 5.7 percent increase she will receive $56,500 as Cheyenne County Weed Superintendent.

The contract will be reviewed by County Attorney Paul Schaub before final approval.

The commissioners and Burks also noted improvement in the county's noxious weeds. .

The commissioners also approved the use of the Visitors Center for an art show by the Cheyenne County Art Guild, and accepted the resignation of Cheyenne County Surveyor Chris O'Malley and Gerald Pennel from the Cheyenne County Fair Board. In a recent meeting of the fair board, Troy Kurz was elected as president, Whitney Whartman as vice-president and temporary secretary. A finance committee was appointed in place of a treasurer.

The board also met as the Board of Equalization, meeting with Assessor Melody Keller and Sybil Prosser of High Plains Paw Welfare, Inc. One of the items discussed as the Board of Equalization was the tax exemptions on real and personal property for High Plains Paws. In the previous commissioners meeting, Keller said there was an Order of Dissolution from the State of Nebraska. Keller said she had driven by the building in question and didn't see any improvements or the building in use, and therefore recommended the request by denied.

“The building is actually being used,” Prosser said.

She said the reason there are no dogs in the building is the zoning, an issue she is trying to get corrected.

Commissioner Phil Sanders asked Prosser about the dissolution issue. She said the issue is about paperwork and submitting the payment for reinstatement.

“I thought it would already be through,” she said. “I paid it in December.”

The board of equalization also reviewed a Homestead Exemption correction on behalf of Kathryn Krueger, and approved a tax list correction for Kandy Cook due to a clerical error.

Reconvening as the board of commissioners, they reviewed a proposal floodplain/floodway development permit for the Nebraska Department of Transportation near Highway 30, discussed purchase of a new truck-trailer by the Highway Department and received an update from Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Tom Payne.
