Council Approves Two More LB840 Appeals

The Sidney City Council reviewed two more business appeals, then granted approval in the June 9 council meeting.

In the previous council meeting, the council approved $5,000 in LB840 funding for Brushed Salon. The decision came with the objection of City Attorney J. Leef who said the business does not fit within the parameters of LB840 as accepted by voters. In the June 9 meeting, she said the council set precedence and therefore had little choice but to approve the appeals. The appeals were submitted by Shirt Tales and Textured Edge.

The program assisting businesses impacted by the COVID-19 restrictions has ended. The City committed $105,000 in forgivable loans, 21 $5,000 forgivable loans, and $40,000 in no-interest loans.

Then council also discussed the Hickory Street Square project and the $250,000 Civic Community Center Financing Fund contract. In the previous meeting, council was told the contract should be canceled because the City will not be able to complete the project on time.

The challenge was finding the rest of the funding necessary to complete the project. In the June 9 meeting, Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce President Hope Feeney told the council county the Hickory Street Square project did not have the necessary financial support or support of the area businesses.

In other business, the council was told the library is open (as of Monday, June 15) with limited capacity. The City is also planning on a fireworks display July 3. City officials are also working on preparing the pool for reopening the pool; no date was given.
