A Sign of Things to Come

Sign Identifies Site of Future Memorial Basketball Court

Work is underway for a new basketball court in Legion Park in memory of Alan Hartzler who was known for his commitment to youth sports and coaching.

The plan is for a regulation-size basketball court constructed in Legion Park east of the Cheyenne County Community Center.

When the project was first announced in February, John Phillips credited Hartzler for developing the travel basketball teams in the area. The travel basketball team program was developed before the Community Center was constructed.

His widow, Mickie Hartzler, said he has a passion for youth basketball. He was also involved in the softball programs, volunteering and coachings in the programs.

"He always had a soft spot for the kids," Phillips said.

Supporters have collected about $7,000 toward their goal of about $50,000. The first fundraising event is a Trap Shoot and Silent Auction scheduled for Sept. 19. The Alan Hartzler Community Fund has been set up with the Oregon Trail Community Foundation.

The proposed basketball court would be constructed of concrete about 84 feet long and 50 feet wide, the specifications of a high school basketball court. The court would be equipped with a hoop at each end, allowing for the option of full- or half-court games. The court would be oriented to play north and south. The site is adjacent to the sand volleyball court east of the Cheyenne County Community Center.

For more information, contact Taylor Wills at 308-672-3539, or Mickie Hartzler at 308-249-6654. Registration for the Trap Shoot is due by Sept. 12.
