South Platte NRD Education Updates Announced

The South Platte Natural Resources District (SPNRD) has officially launched their redesigned website.

The website can be found at the same link as before (spnrd.org). On the website are the latest education updates that are listed below as well as many other resources.

SPNRD has two separate scholarships to be awarded. The first Scholarship offered is due to SPNRD office (mailed or dropped off) before May 1st. One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior, who is a District resident and who is graduating in the academic year of 2020-2021. The applicants must be attending a Nebraska institution (2 year or 4 year/public/private, vocational, or technical certification program) in a Natural Resources, Environmental or Agricultural related field. The application can be found at spnrd.org/education.

Adventure Camp about the Environment (ACE Camp) will be held June 6-9, 2021. ACE Camp is open to students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and want to learn more about natural resources at an adventure camp. The topics that will be covered include aquatics, forestry, range and grassland, wildlife, soils and land.

The camp is hosted at the State 4-H Center near Halsey, Nebraska. The camp cost is $225/camper. SPNRD offers a scholarship that will cover the full cost. Please mail or drop off a scholarship application and registration form found on spnrd.org/education to the SPNRD office before May 7th, 2021.

SPNRD is known for hosting the annual Western Nebraska Children’s Ground Water Festival for 4th graders in the District. The festival will be hosted virtually this May, 2021. Access to the virtual festival will become available Monday, May 3rd and can be accessed at spnrd.org/education.

The virtual festival consists of three videos of SPNRD staff presenting fun activities that teach children about qualities of ground water as well as a crossword puzzle created to go along with the videos. The duration of all videos together is roughly 35 minutes.

Though these presentations are typically created for 4th grade, anyone is able to view the videos on the SPNRD website.

Please contact Sydney Norris, the SPNRD Public Relations and Education Manager at [email protected] for any education needs or ideas.

Norris created an education resource guide that can be found at spnrd.org/education under “Educator Guide” that provides information about all education possibilities at the SPNRD.
