Seniors End Week With Wins

Sidney’s American Legion Post 17 Senior team had a busy week, hosting Sheridan County on Tuesday, then traveling to Gering on Wednesday and then finishing the week with a series against Rapid City at home.

The Seniors started on Tuesday by hosting the Sheridan County Regulators, and a Sidney error in the second inning gave the visitors a two run lead at the end of their half of the inning. Sidney fought back, with Ty Stettner scoring from third on a passed ball in the bottom of the second, and Micah Schneider scoring on a hard hit single by Sam Hashman in the third inning to knot the score at 2-to-2.

The Regulators again took the lead with a run in the the fourth inning, then added another run in the fifth inning to take a 4-to-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Sidney rallied when Jakob Meyer singled then scored on a groundout, but Sidney’s offense stalled and the game ended in a one-run victory for the Regulators, 4-to-3. Meyer led the offense with three hits and an RBI in the loss. Blaine Russell started the game for Sidney and went 4 innings, giving up 10 hits and two earned runs, while Micah Schneider pitched three innings and gave up no hits while tallying nine strikeouts.

The Seniors next traveled to Gering, and fell behind early, surrendering two runs in the first inning and another in the second to fall behind 3-to-0. But the Seniors fought back, putting up a run in the third and the fourth innings to narrow the lead to 3-to-2. However, Gering got its offense back on track, and racked up four singles in the inning that plated two runs to widen their lead. Sidney’s offense was unable to push through any more runs, and the Gering squad scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the victory 10-to-2. Ty Stettner had a hit and an RBI in the loss, while Sam Hashman went 4 and 2/3 innings giving up nine hits and five earned runs. Hashman fanned five batters in his outing.

Sidney returned to Legion Filed for a three game series with the Rapid City Risers, and the action started on Saturday when the teams faced off for a double-header. Sam Hashman took the start for Sidney, and cruised through the first four innings, scattering a few singles and allowing a few baserunners due to errors, but the Risers could not score any runs. A single by Ty Stettner and a double by Sam Hashman powered the Sidney offense in the bottom of the fourth, and the Seniors were able to take a 3-to-0 lead at the end of the frame. Hashman gave up a single that scored two runners for the Risers in the top of the fifth inning to narrow the Sidney lead, and visitors tied the game in the top of the seventh inning on a bunt single that scored the runner from third base. Rapid City could not score in their halves of the eighth and ninth innings, and Sidney was able to get a man on third in their half of the inning when Austin Wolfe blasted a triple to left field, then scored the winning run on a single by Austin Lulf, and Sidney took the first game by a score of 4-to-3. Hashman went the whole way, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six batters.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Rapid City flipped the script and took an early 4-to-0 lead at the end of the top of the third inning. Sidney fought back, scoring a run in the bottom of the the third inning, then two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the Rapid City lead to 4-to-3. Both teams were unable to score any runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Risers took the victory by a 4-to-3 score. Jakob Meyer had a triple and an RBI for the Seniors in the loss.

On Sunday, the teams wrapped up their three-game series Sam Hashman again taking the mound for Sidney. After retiring the Rapid City batters in order, Sidney strung together a walk, two singles and a double to take a 2-to-0 lead. Hashman cruised through the Rapid City lineup, putting up zeros on the scoreboard for the first four innings. Sidney agains strung together three singles, a double and a walk to plate four runs in the third inning, then took advantage of errors to score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-to-0 lead. Rapid City finally scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, but it was too little, too late and the game ended in a 9-to-1 Sidney victory. Sam Hashman pitched five innings, allowing four hits and one run and struck out two in the win. Sam Hashman and Gunnar Dorcey each had two RBI’s for the Seniors, and the Sidney defense did not commit an error. Sidney improves to 3-and-8 on the season. The Seniors were next scheduled to host Bridgeport on Tuesday.
