Helen Policky passed away on September 19, 2021, at Kimball County Manor at the age of 101. Helen, daughter of Emil and Christina Carlson, was born April 20,1920, on the family homestead about twelve miles north of Potter. She was the youngest of eight children, and her family eventually moved to Potter where she attended school and graduated in 1937.

After graduation, she attended junior college in Pasadena, California, for two years. She met the love of her life, Joe Policky, at a barn dance north of Potter while home for the summer.

After exchanging letters during Helen’s last year of junior college, they eloped on June 26, 1939, in Harrisburg, Nebraska.

Helen and Joe began their married life in Sundance, Wyoming, where Joe was employed at his brother’s oil refinery. In 1941, they moved to a farm east of Potter, Nebraska, where they farmed, ranched, and raised their four children. In later years, they enjoyed many adventures with their grand-children. Grandma Helen loved taking them on walks in the meadow to visit and feed the horses, and eventually did this with her great-grandkids also, but had to walk with a cane. These special times will ALWAYS be remembered by her grandchildren.

When Helen was young, she loved dancing and especially music. She taught herself to play the piano in grade school after learning how to read notes on a staff. She played at community churches in Potter during her youth, and took piano lessons at junior college.

After Helen’s children were grown, she again served as organist for Potter Evangelical Lutheran Church for many years. She also loved accompanying and singing with her women’s extension group, the Juliets, and she and her daughter, Patty, shared many hours singing together throughout the years.

Helen was a member of Potter Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, and Prairie West Church of Potter. She enjoyed serving on the election board in Bronson for several years. But the roles she treasured most were being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandma, and friend. Grandma Helen’s bubbly, infectious laugh and beautiful smile will be missed by all.

She is survived by her three children: Gary and wife Zoann Policky of Los Gatos, CA; David and wife Maureen Policky of Lincoln, NE; and Patty and husband Dennis Slama of Potter, NE. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her son Michael and his wife Lorraine, her grandson Brian Policky, and her seven siblings — Eda Lipska, Esther Carlson, Vera Dickerson, Ted Carlson, Edna Carlson, Hildur Johnson, and Fred Carlson.
